Be Waste Wise these holidays

Heading off to the beach this summer?  Whether you're going boating, having a picnic or going camping, take care of our beautiful natural environment by taking care of your waste.

There are lots of ways you can reduce the waste you have to deal with on holiday by a bit of planning before you leave home.  For example, make sure you take your re-fillable water bottles with you to avoid buying bottled water.  And of course your re-usable coffee cups too.  That goes for using reusable containers for snacks too - avoid all that soft plastic packaging.  Wrap your sandwiches in reusable beeswax wraps or store them in reusable containers.

Wherever you go, be a tidy kiwi and make an effort to find out where you can take your recycling.  And can you keep your food waste out of landfill by finding a composting system nearby?  Or even take your Bokashi bin with you?

Every little bit helps - don't let perfection get in the way of doing something!  Remember, we don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly.  We need millions doing it imperfectly.

Proposal one is a phase out of hard-to-recycle plastic types like polyvinyl chloride (plastic type 3) food and beverage packaging, polystyrene food and beverage packaging and expanded polystyrene (plastic type 6), and all oxo-degradable plastic items.

Proposal two seeks feedback on phasing-out more single-use plastic items like produce bags, drink stirrers, non-compostable fruit stickers, tableware, some cups and their lids, cotton buds, and straws.

There's heaps more information on the link above if you want to delve deep into it.
